The paper presents the basic principles of Base Isolation (Earthquake/Vibration) in brief. Transmissibility could be reduced either by shifting the phase between the moving element and the foundation block or by increasing the absorption of energy in the propagating medium. Sallent points In Mechanical and Geodynamic Isolation have been reviewed. Utilisation of liquefaction potentiality of sand to decrease the transmissibility of earthquake tremor to the superstructure has been included. Practical and economically feasible methods of base isolation have been illustrated.
