Widespread devastation and loss of ife were witnessed in the epicentra! region of the September 30, 1993 sarthquake in the 2 districts of Latur and Osmanabad in south eastem Maharaehtra. Traditional construction in the region was non – engineered end had no resistance againet horizontal earthquake forces. In most houses walils were made of random rubble stone masonry and such structures suffered extensive demage. Survey of various earthquake affected viñages, engineered and non – enginsered buildlngs, hospiteis, forts and monuments, placen of worship, schools, bulding materials used, conatruction practice prevslent in the region, their performanca, causes of high casualty figuras and strange phenomena assoc/ated with the sarthquake mre presented in this paper.
