Prof. B.K. Maheshwari, President, ISET is presently Professor, at the Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee. Prof. Maheshwari was born in 1969 and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering with Honors in 1992 from the University of Jodhpur, Master’s Degree in Earthquake Engineering with Honors from the University of Roorkee in 1994, and Ph.D. in 1997 from Saitama University Japan. After PhD, he worked in Tokyo, Japan, and then as a post-doctoral fellow at the Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. In July 2003, Prof. Maheshwari joined briefly BITS Pilani as a faculty. Since Dec. 2004, he is serving as a faculty in the Department of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Roorkee.

Prof. Maheshwari has about 30 years of research experience, and working in all areas of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering particularly Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction, Liquefaction, Dynamic Soil Properties, Constitutive Modeling, Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis, Slope Stability, Landslides and Disaster Mitigation & Management. He has published about 170 research articles including 55 papers in journals of international repute. Under Prof. Maheshwari’s guidance, nine Ph.D. theses are awarded and another three are in progress. He has also supervised 52 M.Tech. dissertations. Prof. Maheshwari worked on 8 sponsored research projects funded by DST, Min. of Earth Sciences and Norwegian Government. He has also worked on many industrial consultancy projects and carried out damage
surveys for many damaging earthquakes.

Prof. Maheshwari coordinated 7 short term courses, worked as a joint organizing secretary for a national conference and as a conference secretary for an international conference. He has attended and delivered oral presentations in a number of International Conferences in Japan, USA, Canada, China, Australia, Europe, Chile and India Prof. Maheshwari is very much involved in review work. He is a reviewer for a number of international journals. He served as an Associate Editor of International Journal of Geomechanics, ASCE during 2015-2018. He also served as an Editor of ISET Journal of Earthquake Technology during 2013-17. Prof. Maheshwari is serving as an editorial board member of Indian Geotechnical Journal. He also served as an EBM of Int. J. of Geotechnical Eng. During 2013-2015.
Prof. Maheshwari is a committee member of CED 39 (Earthquake Engineering) of BIS since June 2013. Since 2018, he is also serving on 4 committees of IRC. He served on three technical committees of ISSMGE: served as a Secretary of TC206 and presently member of TC203 and TC212. He is a member of ASCE, EERI, ISSMGE, IACMAG, a life fellow of ISET, IGS, IWRS and Institute of Engnrs (India).

Prof. Maheshwari has been awarded a Gold Medal from Univ. of Roorkee, Monbusho Fellowship for Ph.D. in Japan and EIT from Ohio State Board, USA. He has been awarded IIT Roorkee’s prestigious Shamsher Prakash Research Award in the year 2009 for his Outstanding Work in the field of Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering area. Also he has been awarded “Excellent Research Contribution Award” of International Association of Computer Methods and Advances in Geomechanics (IACMAG) in Kyoto, Japan in year 2014. Prof. Maheshwari served as a Head of Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation and Management, IIT Roorkee during February 2015 to February 2018. He was part of delegation for India-Japan High-Level Policy Dialogue on Education, led by MHRD secretary to Tokyo, Japan in July 2016. He was the Organizing Secretary for prestigious 16th Symposium on Earthquake Eng. held during Dec. 20-22, 2018 at IIT Roorkee. He served as a Shamsher Prakash Chair Professor during August 2019 to July 2022. Recently, Prof. Maheshwari has been awarded John Booker Medal during 16th Int. Conf. of IACMAG held in Torino, Italy on Sept. 1, 2022.

Prof. Maheshwari joined the Society as Life Member in 2000 and became Fellow of the Society in 2010. He has served the Society (ISET) in various capacities in the past; as ISET Co-Editor (April 2005 to March 2007), as Secretary (April 2007 to March 2011), as Editor of the ISET Journal of Earthquake Technology (April 2013 to March 2017) and as ISET Vice-President (April 2019 to March 2023). Since
April 2023, he is serving as a President of ISET.
