In India, the main seismic zone runs aleng the Himalayan mountain range and in the Rann of Kutch. Very strong earthquakes originated in this belt in the past and caused great devastation resulting in large number of deaths and injuries and extensive loss of property. The large sumber of casualtics was due to the collapse of poorly constructed and heavily occupied buildings.
