The major earthquake zones of the world are found in (i) the Circum-Pacific belt, (ii) the Alpine-Himalayan belt and (iii)the mid-oceanic ridges of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. These earthquake-belts which cover large segments of the Earth, have been studied in detail by various workers, but little attention has been paid to earthquake occurrences on continental shields and platforms. These areas are assumed to be stable with very low earthquake probabilities for causing significant damage to life and pro- perty.
